FedEx – FedEx.com: FedEx Shipper Interfaces1

(FedEx) Federal Express (www.fedex.com) – specializes in cost-effective, small-package shipping, offering dependable business-to-business delivery or convenient residential service.

I served as a Senior Information Architect on this project. As one of a very small group of UX professionals that could actually code, the focus of my involvement was to actually build the front end prototypes for approval by FedEx executives.

Besides the obvious challenges, such as the amount of screens needing to be prototyped and the requirement to roll up my sleeves and code, this project actually presented a unique opportunity to perform in depth analysis and provide solutions for interfaces that had very high green-screen counts. This means that the interfaces were heavily used by individuals who either relied on tabbing or shortcut keys to navigate through the interface. These users pound out a high volume of shipments at an extremely rapid pace, so the introduction of mouse-required actions severely impacted user productivity levels and were therefore excluded as features.

Sampling of the shipper interfaces. For obvious reasons, I am not able to provide large clear images, nor detailed wireframes.Sampling of the shipper interfaces. For obvious reasons, I am not able to provide large clear images, nor detailed wireframes.
